Local Food Banks

Posted by Nikki Reagan | A Little Local Flavor,Nikki's Notes | Sunday 20 November 2011 4:16 pm

The holiday season is fast approaching and that means delicious food and family time.  But what if it didn’t? What if while everyone else was celebrating, you found yourself in desperate need of assistance to feed your family. Because of the current economic climate, this is the norm for a very large number of our local residents.

If you find you have a little extra to give this holiday season, donating to a food bank is  a great way to give back to the community.

Band Marketing Tip

Posted by Nikki Reagan | Offline Marketing Ideas & Tips | Wednesday 23 February 2011 11:22 pm

In a previous life, I helped to promote  local bands  in our area and now as a graphic designer for a hotel/casino, I do a lot of creative work for our live entertainers – posters, backlit signage, hotel mailers, websites, etc and I’m discovering a disturbing trend in the lack of quality photographs, bios, etc for those entertainers.

I cannot stress enough the need for bands to have a promo kit, preferably an online version, that is easily accessible.

What should be in said promo kit?  I’m glad you asked…

High Resolution Photographs

This is an absolute MUST.  I cannot use a picture that I grabbed off of your website.  The file size is too small and the quality will be poor – which will make the quality of my mailer/poster/etc suffer.  With that being said, I also cannot go without a picture and will usually resort to trolling and raiding your Facebook or MySpace pages as some of those photos might be barely passable if I use them small enough.

Trust me when I say that you would rather have your band promoted with a high quality promo photo.   It will give you a more professional appearance and you can then control the images that are used to promote your band.

Bio of Band and Band Members

Prepare the publicist and/or media contacts as to who you are, what you do and why people should come see you play. Just some suggestions:

  • What brought you together as a band?
  • Who influences your music?
  • Where you have played in the past?
  • What awards have you won?
  • Are you a cover band? Do you play originals?
  • Set List – What can someone expect to hear when they come to see your band?

Video and Audio of Your Performances

From the promotion side of things, I may not be familiar with your genre or your music and being able to see and hear your band in action will help me “see” the best way to present your band in our materials.

From the prospective of someone looking to hire a band, video and audio will let them know exactly what they can expect when they hire you, it builds trust, and will move someone to pay your fee.

From the consumer’s point of view, again, it let’s them know what they can expect to experience when they come see your show and may swing someone to your side who is on the fence about whether or not to spring for that show ticket.

Your promo kit can be in any form although an electronic version makes it very easy for a marketer or graphic designer to retrieve the information without having to call you or have you mail a version.  We’re all busy, do you really want to be fielding my phone calls all day?

In closing, I would like to introduce you to the band that actually sparked this blog post.  Their website (from a marketing point of view) is fantastic. Their online promo kit (website) includes high resolution versions of their logo, an 8×10 promo shot, video, stage plot (again, VERY helpful that we don’t have to ask for it), a description of the band and a ton of contact information.

The band’s name is Dust ‘N Bones, they are a Guns ‘N Roses tribute band out of Southern California.  You can check out their website and see what I’m talking about at www.dustnbones.com

New beginnings…

Posted by Nikki Reagan | Nikki's Notes | Sunday 7 February 2010 12:36 pm

Hello everyone! I just wanted to make a little note here that as of now, I will be referring all of my design clients to a new designer. I have accepted a position at the Tropicana/River Palms in Laughlin, NV to be their new Graphic Design Manager.  I’m excited to have this opportunity and think it will be a very, very good thing as far as my sanity is concerned.

I definitely want to thank everyone who has been supporting me the past couple of years. I absolutely love what I do and I am excited that I will get to focus my passion so intently on these two properties.

If you are looking for specific design services, don’t hesitate to contact me, I can point you in the right direction.

Pondering: To Flip or Not To Flip?

Posted by Nikki Reagan | Graphic and Website Design | Sunday 27 September 2009 1:19 am

I’ve noticed that a few publications in our area have gone to a flip book format with their websites.  I’m wondering how good of an idea this is.

I would think that the sites are sacrificing search engine readable content because each page has been converted into a graphic or a flash file.  While the site becomes more “interactive”, we’re still talking about 40+ pages of content (on these particular sites) that you have to “flip” through with no searchable features.  Is this  counter productive to a user friendly site? Do I want to sit and flip through a book page by page online or do I want to just click on what I want to read and move on?

Many of the pages have a ton of content on them, making the text on the page virtually unreadable unless you zoom in on the page, which just adds more clicks.

On the plus side, the site is impressive looking from a graphics standpoint and it is kind of cool to see the 3D page turning in action, for about 3 minutes. Other forms of media including audio and video can be added to the pages, making the user experience a little less monotonous. You can control your content as text and graphics won’t be able to be lifted from the page as easily, which is another plus.

All in all, I suppose that since the publications in question  plan on keeping a print presence,  offering a website  similar to their printed product would benefit  their printed product, but only their printed product.

To me, it seems that a page flipping website is just a backward step in technology.
